SWITCH (Singapore Week of Innovation & TeCHnology) is back for the second year with a line-up that promises to be bigger and better than the last. Held over three days from 18 to 20 September at Sands Expo & Convention Centre, SWITCH 2017 will feature eight conferences, over 300 exhibits and seven satellite partner events. The event will also kick off with an opening address by Minister for Finance, Heng Swee Keat, followed by a panel discussion on “Imagining a New World with Technology” featuring Mike Descheneaux, President, Silicon Valley Bank; William Bao Bean, General Partner, SOSV; and Taizo Son, CEO, Mistletoe.
Highly regarded as one of the leading “plug and play” platforms in Asia, more than 6,000 are expected to attend SWITCH 2017. What on earth is a ‘Silhouette Zoetrope’? Inventor and patent holder Christine Veras will explain to the audience how a Silhouette Zoetrope is created. It is a mixture of the new and the old. Christine Veras is a Ph.D. candidate at the Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore. In her Ph.D. research, titled ‘‘Animated Installations as Reinventions of Early Devices that Flicker and Rotate: Astonishment and Wonder in the Quest for an Expanded Animation Experience,’’ she investigates physical and digital multimedia strategies that connect animation, contemporary art installations and optical illusions to provide a unique experience for the public.
Her invention, the Silhouette Zoetrope (US Patent Nº 9,488,903) was selected as the TOP3 illusion in the worldwide contest ‘‘Best Illusion of the Year 2016’’ organized by the Neural Correlate Society, formed by neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists.
