Course Description

Learning Objective

To deliver to the students a practice-based introduction to the basic practice of compositing and its place within the production process. To develop in the students the beginnings of a picture sense in the application of compositing techniques.

Content

This course introduces to the students the techniques for combining into one output elements sourced from 3D, still, live action footage, generated and animated image sequences. They will be introduced to technical issues such as matting (green screen, lima key, rotoscoping etc) premultiplication, colour adjustment, animation, generation etc will be covered. Creative considerations such as image unification, timing and look-and-feel will also be also be covered.

Learning Outcome

The students will have been introduced to the technical essentials of compositing and its place in the broader context of film and animation. They will also have been introduced to the pictorial demands of image integrating multiple sources into one image.

Student Assessment

  1. Final Assessment: 30%

  2. Continuous Assessment: 70% (of which at least 15% is participation)
