Course Description

Learning Objective

Through practice-based teaching, to develop the student's 2D animation skills. To introduce to the student the essential 2D production process.


This course introduces students to sophisticated techniques of 2D animation and builds upon some of the issues covered in DT2000. The students will be introduced to the use of 2D animation software and the entirety of the 2D production process will be covered.

• Introduction to different styles in 2D animation

• Design concepts in experimental animation and independent artistic shorts

• Basics of uniting dialogue with animation

• Refined concepts for drawing in animation

- Sketching 

- Straights against curves

- Working from reference

- Use of anatomy

- Caricature and realism

• Sophisticated use and expanded knowledge of animation principles:

• Walks, weight, arcs and wave-actions.

• Follow through and overlapping action.


• Mid Sem review of assignments

• Acting for animation

• Refined concepts of dialogue animation

Learning Outcome

Having developed their 2D animation knowledge-base and skill-set the students will be better equipped to place 2D animation within the broader context of the production process.

Student Assessment

  1. Final Assessment: 40%

  2. Continuous Assessment: 60% (of which at least 15% is participation)

Continuous assessment components may include:

  • Studio-based exercises and projects

  • Individual, group and team-based assignments
