Course Description


Learning Objective

To introduce to students through practice-based learning the ideas and practice of experience design. To introduce to students the formal and practice-based requirements of the event-driven experience.


As the realm of communication continues to expand its boundaries, performance, immersive spaces and choreographed experiences are becoming increasing relevant in visual communication. This course will introduce the history and practice of spectacles, festivals, 20th century live art and contemporary communication pieces. Students will learn to score, choreograph, stage, document and translate experimental performance into communication solutions, as well as design and implement immersive experiences for real audiences.

• Intro to course

2 - 6

• Historical overview of international feasts, festivals, celebrations, gatherings, 20th century happenings, events, festivals and contemporary 4D campaigns

• Presentation skills 

• Methodologies and systems for designing communication projects focused in real time with live participants


• Mid Sem review of assignments

8 - 12

• Learning to direct 

• Scoring and Staging skills 

• Introduction to relevant technology, hardware & software


• Final review of assignments

Learning Outcome

The students will have an introductory practice-based overview of the needs of event design. The students will be able to manage a range of time-based media in such a way as they serve the formal and practical needs of an event.

Student Assessment

  1. Final Assessment: 30%

  2. Continuous Assessment: 70% (of which at least 15% is participation)

  • Studio-based exercises and projects

  • Individual, group and team-based assignments
